DAKSHINANATYA
SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL ARTS
Dakshinanatya School of Classical Arts was founded in Asheville in 2011 by Thessaly Tracy. After living in India for more than six years, where she studied Indian dance and dance theory, making the art the center of her life, Thessaly has brought this divine art to Asheville, with the enthusiastic blessings of her guru.
She hopes to instill in her students discipline, grace, spirituality and a love of the culture that originated and refined this sacred art form. She is currently offering classes to adults and children in traditional Kalakshetra form. Classes will focus initially on steps and body posture and will gradually move towards items and abhinaya as the individual needs of the student warrant. Classes will cover basic steps and technique (adavus), rhythm and timing (thalam), mudras or hand hasthas and their meaning (hastha prayogaah), emotional expression (bhavam), as well as history, theory and spirituality, including slokas and Sanskrit chant.
